About the job
The Literacy and Numeracy Trainer will provide basic literacy and numeracy training to women beneficiaries and integrate practical financial literacy and basic business skills, including saving, budgeting, costing, pricing, record keeping and income management. The Trainer will support beneficiaries to apply these skills to their household and livelihood activities and facilitate the formation and functioning of Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
Responsibilities:
A. Literacy and Numeracy Training
- Deliver basic literacy and numeracy training using appropriate adult-learning methods and practical exercises.
- Develop lesson plans, learning materials and training schedules according to participants' needs and learning levels.
- Teach practical numeracy applicable to daily life and livelihood activities, including basic calculations, measurement and quantities.
- Monitor attendance and learning progress, conduct assessments and maintain training records.
- Encourage participants to apply acquired skills in their daily lives and livelihood activities.
B. Financial and Basic Business Skills
- Integrate practical financial literacy and basic business skills into the training.
- Provide orientation on saving, budgeting, income and expenditure management, borrowing, lending and financial planning.
- Teach basic costing, pricing, sales, income and profit/loss calculation related to poultry, kitchen gardening and other livelihood activities.
- Introduce simple business planning and responsible management of livelihood income.
- Train beneficiaries in basic record keeping, including purchases, costs, sales, income, expenses, savings, loans and repayments.
C. Self-Help Groups and Savings
- Facilitate the formation and strengthening of SHGs in coordination with the Project Manager and Community Mobilizers.
- Orient SHG members on group responsibilities, savings, internal lending, repayment and transparent financial management.
- Support SHGs to maintain simple records of savings, loans, repayments, attendance, meetings and group funds.
- Provide technical support during monthly SHG meetings and strengthen members' practical financial and numeracy skills.
D. Livelihood and Market Support
- Coordinate with Livelihood Trainers to integrate relevant financial and business skills into poultry and kitchen-gardening activities.
- Support beneficiaries to apply costing, pricing, record keeping and income-management skills to their livelihood activities.
- Provide basic orientation on product quality, pricing, customer relations and appropriate selling methods.
- Support beneficiaries to identify potential local buyers, traders and customers and facilitate basic market-linkage opportunities where feasible.
E. Coordination, Monitoring and Reporting
- Coordinate with Livelihood Trainers, Community Mobilizers and MEAL staff to support integrated training, SHG activities and follow-up.
- Maintain relevant training and SHG records and contribute to monitoring, reporting, lessons learned and success stories.
- Participate in project meetings, assessments and monitoring visits as required.
- Ensure compliance with AWEC safeguarding, PSEA, Do No Harm, confidentiality and other relevant policies.
- Perform other related duties assigned by the Line Manager.
Job requirements
Education and Experience:
A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, Social Sciences or any other related fields.
A minimum 4 years of relevant experience in literacy, numeracy, adult education, financial literacy, business development or related areas, preferably with women and vulnerable groups.
Experience in facilitating community-based training, SHGs or savings groups is desirable.
Skills:
Practical knowledge of budgeting, saving, costing, pricing, record keeping and basic business skills.
Strong communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
Ability to explain literacy, numeracy and financial/business concepts in simple and practical ways.
Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, ethics and culturally sensitive teaching practices.
Fluent in Dari and Pashto; English is an asset.
Willingness to travel regularly within Paghman District.
