About the job

Provide specialized engineering and research support for the assessment, design, adaptation, prototyping and technical validation of electrical equipment used in DABS transmission and distribution operations. The position evaluates opportunities for safe, reliable and cost-effective local manufacture, assembly and refurbishment; prepares engineering documentation and technical recommendations; and supports coordination with operational departments and qualified manufacturers. The post is a technical specialist role without direct staff supervision. All designs, trials and production proposals remain subject to the applicable DABS review and approval procedures

Duties & responsibilities

Equipment Assessment and Research

  • Assess equipment performance, design characteristics, service history, failure modes, maintainability and lifecycle costs, using available DABS operational and maintenance data

  • Identify priority equipment or components for redesign, standardization, refurbishment or local production based on documented operational needs

  • Review relevant IEC, IEEE, ANSI and DABS requirements for each proposed product and record the applicable technical, safety and quality criteria

Engineering Design and Product Development

  • Develop and evaluate design concepts, technical specifications, engineering drawings, calculations, material lists and manufacturing requirements for selected electrical equipment and components

  • Adapt proposed designs to local climatic, environmental, network and maintenance conditions without compromising electrical safety, reliability or interoperability

  • Use suitable CAD and engineering tools to document design alternatives, technical assumptions, design limitations and recommended solutions for approval

Local Manufacturing and Production Feasibility

  • Conduct technical feasibility assessments of local manufacture, assembly and refurbishment, including material availability, production capability, tooling, workforce skills and quality-control needs

  • Compare feasible production or sourcing alternatives in terms of cost, quality, durability, delivery and operational risk, and prepare evidence-based recommendations

  • Assess manufacturing and assembly processes, inspection checkpoints and traceability arrangements; propose improvements consistent with approved technical requirements

Prototyping, Inspection and Technical Validation

  • Prepare or review prototype specifications, inspection and test plans, acceptance criteria and records in coordination with relevant DABS technical units

  • Provide technical support during prototype fabrication, factory or laboratory testing, pilot installation and monitored field trials, as authorized

  • Evaluate test results and field observations, investigate nonconformities and recommend corrective actions or design revisions before wider implementation

Coordination, Reporting and Knowledge Transfer

  • Coordinate technical inputs with DABS operations, maintenance, procurement, planning and quality-assurance teams to confirm practical requirements and implementation constraints

  • Liaise with approved suppliers, local fabricators, manufacturers and technical institutions on product development, testing and knowledge transfer under the direction of the R&D Directorate

  • Prepare technical assessment reports, feasibility studies, design packages, test summaries, progress updates and recommendations for management review

  • Maintain organized and traceable engineering records and perform other related technical duties assigned by the Director of Research and Development within the scope of the position

Job requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering

  • Master's degree is an advantage

  • At least four years of relevant professional experience in electrical equipment engineering, design and development, manufacturing or assembly, testing, quality assurance, or power utility operations

  •  Experience with transmission or distribution equipment and practical product-development activities is desirable

  • Sound knowledge of electrical equipment, materials, manufacturing methods, inspection practices and applicable technical standards

  • Ability to produce and review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, bills of materials and technical evaluation reports

  • Proficiency in relevant CAD tools, such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks, and engineering documentation software

  • Understanding of prototype development, test procedures, product conformity, electrical safety and quality assurance

  • Ability to assess manufacturing feasibility, investigate equipment failures and recommend practical improvements

  • Strong analytical thinking, technical writing, coordination and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary technical teams

  • Effective written and verbal communication in English and relevant national languages
