The Tax Manager is responsible for coordinating and managing the company’s tax and customs matters and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and reporting requirements. The position works closely with Finance, Procurement, Supply Chain, Logistics, Production, HR, and other departments and coordinates with relevant tax and customs authorities, government offices, consultants, and external stakeholders.
Duties & responsibilities
A. Tax Compliance and Management
Manage the company’s day-to-day tax matters and ensure compliance with applicable tax laws, regulations, and procedures.
Ensure the accurate and timely calculation, preparation, and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns, including BRT, income tax, withholding tax, property tax, and other applicable taxes.
Prepare and maintain supporting documentation for tax filings and submissions to the relevant authorities.
Monitor changes in tax laws, regulations, and procedures and advise management on their potential impact on the company.
Review transactions, contracts, leases, property-related transactions, inter-company charges, and other business activities to identify tax implications.
Ensure the proper calculation, deduction, reporting, and payment of withholding taxes applicable to vendors, contractors, and service providers.
Monitor the company’s overall tax position and identify potential tax risks, liabilities, and compliance gaps.
Maintain complete and accurate records of tax filings, payments, assessments, correspondence, and other supporting documents.
Conduct periodic reviews of tax records and internal tax procedures and recommend improvements where required.
Develop and maintain appropriate internal controls for tax accounting and compliance.
Coordinate tax audits, inspections, assessments, and related matters with the relevant authorities.
Respond to tax authority inquiries and support the resolution of tax assessments, disputes, and other tax-related matters.
Act as the main point of contact with tax consultants, auditors, and relevant government authorities.
Provide guidance and training to Finance staff on tax compliance requirements and best practices.
Keep senior management informed of significant tax risks, liabilities, regulatory changes, and potential cost-saving opportunities.
B. Customs and Import
Coordinate and oversee customs matters related to imported finished goods, raw materials, packaging materials, machinery, spare parts, equipment, and other imports.
Review customs declarations and supporting documents to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
Review customs duties, import taxes, fees, and other applicable import-related costs.
Monitor the correct classification of products, HS codes, customs valuation, and other customs requirements.
Coordinate with customs authorities, clearing agents, Logistics, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to support timely and compliant customs clearance.
Ensure compliance with applicable customs and import regulations and procedures.
Maintain proper records of customs declarations, import documents, duty payments, clearance documents, and related correspondence.
Identify and report potential customs risks, discrepancies, or compliance issues to management.
C. Production and Business Operations
Work with Production and Finance teams to assess the tax implications of locally manufactured products and production-related purchases.
Review the tax and customs implications of importing raw materials, machinery, spare parts, packaging materials, and other production inputs.
Support management in assessing the tax and customs impact of new products, commercial transactions, import arrangements, and changes in business activities.
Provide tax and customs guidance when the company introduces new products, expands operations, or enters into new business activities.
Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure tax and customs requirements are considered during operational and commercial planning.
D. Business Expansion
Support management with tax and customs matters related to the establishment or operation of new companies, branches, subsidiaries, or other business entities.
Assist in establishing appropriate tax and customs compliance procedures for new entities and business operations.
Coordinate with Finance and management to ensure new business activities are properly assessed from tax, customs, and regulatory perspectives.
E. Reporting and Team Coordination
Prepare regular management reports covering tax liabilities, customs matter, audits, assessments, compliance issues, and other significant tax and customs matters.
Provide clear and timely advice to management on significant tax and customs risks and their potential financial impact.
Supervise, guide, and support Tax or Customs staff, where applicable.
Ensure assigned team members complete their responsibilities accurately and within established deadlines.
Perform other related duties and responsibilities assigned by management.
Job requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field/Master Degree preferred
Professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA, CMA, or equivalent is an advantage.
5 years of relevant experience in taxation, customs, finance, or a related field.
Strong computer skills and proficiency in MS Office, particularly MS Excel.
Practical experience with accounting software and ERP systems, preferably Odoo and QuickBooks.
Ability to review accounting and financial information through accounting/ERP systems and extract relevant tax and customs data.
Strong practical knowledge of taxation and customs matters.
Good understanding of import, supply chain, production, and commercial operations.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Good attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to work with government authorities and external stakeholders professionally.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Strong integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
