About the job

The Solar PV Design Engineer will be responsible for conducting technical assessments, system sizing, electrical design, energy simulations, and preparing detailed engineering documentation for grid-connected, off-grid, and hybrid solar PV systems. The role requires strong technical expertise in battery energy storage, diesel generator integration, electrical protection, and power distribution, as well as close coordination with civil, structural, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, cost effective, and efficient solar energy solutions in compliance with applicable international standards.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Conduct site assessments, electrical load analysis, solar resource evaluations, and feasibility studies for solar PV projects.

  • Design grid-connected, off-grid, and hybrid solar PV systems for residential, commercial, and utility scale applications.

  • Perform PV system sizing, inverter and battery selection, cable sizing, voltage drop calculations, and electrical protection design.

  • Design battery energy storage systems (BESS) and integrate solar PV with diesel generators and existing electrical networks.

  • Prepare solar PV layouts, single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical calculations, and detailed engineering drawings.

  • Conduct energy simulations and performance analysis using PVsyst, PV*Sol, HOMER Pro, or equivalent software.

  • Perform technical and financial evaluations, including energy generation, system losses, CAPEX, OPEX, and LCOE.

  • Prepare design reports, technical specifications, Bills of Quantities (BoQs), and cost estimates.

  • Review equipment specifications, address client comments, and provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Engineering, or a related field; a Master's degree or relevant professional certification is an advantage.

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience, including at least 7 years in detailed solar PV system design and simulation.

  • Proven experience in designing grid-connected, off-grid, and hybrid solar PV systems, including battery energy storage and diesel generator integration.

  • Strong proficiency in PVsyst, AutoCAD, HOMER Pro, PV*Sol or other solar simulation programs, and Microsoft Excel for engineering design, simulation, and calculations.

  • Working knowledge of ETAP; experience with HelioScope, SketchUp, or equivalent software is an advantage.

  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical system sizing, power distribution, protection coordination, earthing, lightning protection, and energy storage systems.

  • Familiarity with applicable IEC standards and relevant IEEE and NFPA requirements.

  • Experience preparing detailed engineering drawings, electrical calculations, technical specifications, design reports, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).

  • Experience with utility scale solar projects, UN agencies, international NGOs, engineering consultancy firms, or EPC contractors is an advantage.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, technical reporting, communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.

  • Good written and spoken English; knowledge of Dari and/or Pashto is an advantage.
