The Water Resources and Dam Design Engineer will be responsible for hydrological and hydraulic assessments, technical reviews, and detailed engineering design of check dams, small dams, spillways, flood protection structures, and irrigation infrastructure. The role includes watershed analysis, flood estimation, design optimization, and preparation of engineering calculations, technical drawings, design reports, specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs). The engineer will coordinate with geotechnical, structural, survey, and environmental teams to deliver safe, cost-effective, climate-resilient, and sustainable designs in accordance with applicable national and international engineering standards.
Conduct technical assessments, design reviews, and detailed engineering design of earthen dams, stone masonry check dams, concrete dams, spillways, intake structures, irrigation canals, and flood protection works.
Perform hydrological studies, including watershed analysis, rainfall runoff modeling, flood frequency analysis, peak discharge estimation, and flood routing.
Carry out hydraulic modeling and design of spillways, outlet structures, diversion structures, river training works, and erosion protection systems.
Perform engineering analyses related to dam stability, seepage, slope stability, foundation conditions, filtration, drainage, and structural safety.
Review existing designs, calculations, and drawings to identify technical deficiencies and develop appropriate rehabilitation and design solutions.
Evaluate potential risks of overtopping, piping, sedimentation, scouring, and structural failure, and recommend mitigation measures.
Prepare detailed design calculations, engineering drawings, technical reports, specifications, cost estimates, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
Conduct field investigations, site inspections, and technical evaluations to verify design assumptions and project conditions.
Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, survey, and environmental teams throughout the design process.
Ensure engineering designs comply with applicable national and international standards, including USBR, ICOLD, ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and IBC.
Incorporate climate resilience, environmental protection, and safety requirements into engineering designs.
Provide technical support during design reviews, tender preparation, and project implementation.
Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and quality of engineering deliverables through established QA/QC procedures.
Master’s degree in Hydraulic Engineering, Dam Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field with at least 7 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of experience.
Proven experience in the assessment, analysis, rehabilitation, and detailed design of earthen dams, stone masonry check dams, concrete dams, spillways, intake structures, irrigation canals, river training works, and flood protection structures.
Strong technical knowledge of hydrological and hydraulic modeling, flood routing, spillway design, sediment transport, scour analysis, dam stability, seepage analysis, slope stability, foundation design, and embankment protection.
Proficiency in HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, GeoStudio (SEEP/W and SLOPE/W), PLAXIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and ArcGIS, with experience in relevant hydraulic, geotechnical, and structural design software.
Experience preparing detailed engineering calculations, design reports, technical drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
Strong understanding of dam safety, hydraulic structure performance, foundation conditions, filtration and drainage systems, and practical rehabilitation solutions.
Familiarity with applicable international engineering standards and guidelines, including USBR, ICOLD, ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and IBC.
Previous experience with UN agencies, international NGOs, engineering consulting firms, or donor funded water infrastructure projects is preferred.
Strong analytical, problem solving, technical reporting, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
Ability to conduct field investigations, evaluate existing infrastructure conditions, and develop safe, sustainable, and cost effective engineering solutions.
Good written and spoken English; knowledge of Dari and/or Pashto is preferred.
Interested candidates should submit their updated CV, relevant certificates, and samples or summaries of previous design projects
